Music Tuesday #293: Abrasive Softness

Hem is the opening track of the debut album by Kiiõtõ titled  As Dust We Rise.  The band is a recent cooperation from the talented Lamb-singer Lou Rhodes and pianist Rohan Heath

The track opens with sad piano chords and haunting strings that create an immediate  tension. These elements are not overtly chaotic, but rather sharp and insistent, contrasting with a melodic, yet dark tone. While the instrumentation is sharp, Lou Rhodes’ voice brings an intimate, gentle quality to the lyrics, which delve into deeply personal themes of birth, attachment, and childhood struggles ("Daddy said that I was wild... I'd fight to keep my mind free").
The song blends these stabbing, angular musical elements with a "pulsing, wordless chorale" and eventually, a muted trumpet, adding a layer of warmth to the tense, sharp foundation.

This is the kind of music that makes my day.
