Music Tuesday #070: Under Cover Episode 5 - Lonely heart

Last post of the year!  Just before Christmas I'm staying on topic by thinking about the lonely hearts in this world. You might know this song by Heart, but have you every heard the original?  Which one do you prefer? Heart - Alone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cw1ng75KP0 I-ten - Alone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXEhVuIjSms We're halfway through the Under Cover series and I'm taking a break until after New Year. Cheers!

Music Tuesday #069: Pukka Tanita

While I was still figuring out how to grow up in 1988, the 19 year old Tanita was at the height of her musical career.  I must have heard "Twist in my sobriety" and "Good tradition" so much on the radio at that time that I feel those songs are ingrained in my memory of the late 80s.  I wasn't fluent in English then, so I never really listened to the lyrics at that time.  Especially Twist in my Sobriety needs some research.  These lyrics are not typical for pop music at all.  Rumor has it that she said this about the song:  "the song is really about not understanding - when you're 18, you've got a very particular emotional relationship with the world, you feel very isolated, and everybody else is so distant and cold. And I think I was singing about not feeling anything or not being moved by things around. I think this is a strong feeling when you're just after adolescence." Yep, that was pretty much why I had long hair and my stereo on ful

Music Tuesday #068: King of the Daltons

There is too much music around nowadays.  It is hard to both enjoy music and discover new bands at the same time: there is not enough time to do both.  So today I was driving to the Saturday shopping and suddenly remembered that I haven't listened for the longest time to King Dalton.  I remember they had a fabulous debut album a while ago.  It turns out that that album is from 2013 and that King Dalton has three albums out right now.  Enjoy this mix of popfolk, country and blues. Those familiar with the Belgian folk music scene will recognize Jorunn Bauweraerts of Lais fame. Music Tuesday #067: Hymn in a metal jacket

With last week's post in mind I went looking for a folk hymn which has been recorded recently and in a style miles away from the original.  I ended up with Northwest Passage by Stan Rogers.  You may want to read up on what it all means ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Passage_(song) ) Here's the orginal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVY8LoM47xI And here's the version by Unleash the Archers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRD3vrSLPaw Chorus: Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea; Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage And make a Northwest Passage to the sea. Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie The sea route to the Orient for which so many died; Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones. (chorus) Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland In the footsteps of br
