Music Tuesday #017: Bizarro series, episode 3

Interesting how I just discovered that this is Music Tuesday 18 as I started counting from 0… Anyway, we’re due for a new episode in the Bizarro series.  Because of the short week I am kind of pushing this early. Enjoy. The video is gold, the music less appealing.  O, wait for bumface to appear. It doesn’t happen often that I’m flabbergasted, but this one did it. iwrestledabearonce - Boat Paddle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqjChIgzP5Y For those that can’t bear to watch this to the end, here’s the spoiler: they save the planet. And now for something far better, a band I discovered late last year and has been on my playlist every week since.  That is the reason why I arrive early in the office, 50% chance MD+2 enjoys this song all the way from MR Brussels :). This is for me the perfect mix of pop and metal including a good dose of healthy riffs and properly seasoned with a good scream or two.  Yummie! Music Tuesday #016: The Satanic Verses

Schmerz verbreitet sich in meinem Kopf, Ganz aufgequollen mein Augenlicht zersetzt, Das Herz verbrennt im weißen Nichts Und doch es wird... Bridging from last week's Elend back towards the realm of what is nice and cosy, via the German Gothic band Das Ich. For a while this one was on repeat in my room when I was studying. It made me happy and optimistic. The repetitiveness is not musically top of the bill, but German was pretty much made for this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC9VLn7380Q Second song of the week is by my all time second favorite band Tool, their only song in German and a cooking tip all-in-one... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EcmOUedrMc And finally, a beautiful piece of art to top up on the atmosphere Tool created, a warning for those yearning for the power of simplistic worldviews: de Staat with their award winning Witchdoctor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ttGgIQpAUc How about that to kick start a cold autumn Tuesday?

Music Tuesday #015: Hey DJ, can you play this song?

Today a suggestion made by a colleague. It's a Grammy award nominated song where the song title already indicates a quite disturbed mind. The lyrics don't disappoint anyway. I like the dark, and I always have been attracted to that which is the underbelly of society. Twenty years ago I used to like walking in Winter at 3AM on a weekday in Ostend. That city turns into the sinkhole of society in the early morning hours. I always thought that it being the last station on the lines had something to do with it. I wouldn't be surprised Liege has the same feel. The cold wind in winter helps to create that sad, slightly creepy but above all empty and lonely feeling. At that time some pubs are still open and become the gathering place for those where home is a worse place than the bar where they have to listen to each-other's misery. I can guarantee you that you learn a lot about the human condition. Coming back to the song of today. I like the fact that she holds back her

Music Tuesday #014: Eclectic folk day

Is it because I write this on an autumn evening while in the dark the layered voices of Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards create the perfect melancholic atmosphere? I think this song works anytime of day. As long as you're willing to ride along. Take a cuppa, close your eyes and let it wash over you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow1baf3NUDk For a more haunted experience, to really feel the salt winds on a cold evening on the shores of Iceland, why not listen to Sólstafir? A band which still gets programmed on Metal festivals while they have moved on since then. Nowadays you get tons of atmospheric soundscapes which invoke the fantastic loneliness you can experience in an empty and rough landscape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8n8Uy5KmvU

Music Tuesday #013: I bet you didn't expect this

Off course I still remember my first mosh pit experience (10 points if you can find me in this video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrU_L8m0SDk ). The Pixies were at their height of fame and I was young enough still to know no limits. The Pixies were known for their quiet-loud dynamics and their mix of punk rock and surf music. I hear that same vibe in the song of today. A couple of years later lo fi music bands like Sebadoh (their debut Bubble & Scrape really blew my mind) were a serious part of my life. The lo fi sound communicated a feeling I could definitely relate to. It stuck ever since. Imagine my surprise when last night I came across LaLa LaLa.  Her new album The Lamb got a casual play last night and the first song Destroyer immediately threw me back a good 25 years. A bit of Pixies, a hint of lo fi and still sounding modern... I'm digging it. So here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu9zw0CDtnA Compared to the Pixies: https://www.youtube.com/wat
