Music Tuesday #225: The three stately colors

De Staat is one of the most intriguing bands of the last decennia.  They are unconventional, they have a punk attitude.  Because they grew up with electronic music that's what they produce. But it sounds heavy, the lyrics are worth listening to. So this doesn't feel like electronic music but rather rock music.  Maybe because guitars are in drop D tuned?
Their lastest album features 3 colors: red, yellow and blue.  And those colors dictate the style of songs: red for aggressive rock tracks, yellow for funky dance tracks and  blue for big-scale melodic rock songs.
Hence the album has 3 discs, one for each color.  
There is always a song that should match your mood.

Do you know them?  They have been a band from Brussels since 1983.  And just like Brussels who gets its character by being squeezed between the Flemish, Walloon and European expat forces, these guys have been molded by many musical trends and influences.  As a result, think blues meets heavy-metal, with some synth thrown for good measure.  This is not for the fainthearted. Music Tuesday #176: Success is a fleeting moment

This week marks the 4th year that this blog has been running.  Countless times I have almost given up, the stress of coming up with new songs and writing something about it is not a mere trifle. This week I was thinking about bands that missed their opportunity to become hugely successful, not that you must pursue this of course.  But sometimes bands disappear from the scene just before they will make it.  And that's a pity. The band I present to you split just when their breakthrough was imminent.  Maybe, in true punk style, they didn't want success?  I don't blame them.  Ultimately everyone should be allowed to make that choice.  Success is not a guarantee for happiness I guess.
