Music Tuesday #109: Audiophile alert

It may not be common knowledge, but I am a bit of an audiophile.  But rather than spend enormous amounts on equipment or believe in much of the snake oil sold in the audio world, I keep looking for that which gives me the best "bang for the buck". Hence my main sound system runs a couple of Jamo Cornet 195 floor standers, paired with a Marantz PM8000, Marantz CD6000 OSE and a Pro-Ject Debut turntable.  My desk where I work at features 2 full-range transmission line speakers which I made myself, designed around a Monacor SPH-60x full range speaker, driven by an Indeed 25W TA2021 class T amplifier and paired with a Fostex PM-SUBmini 2.  Everywhere else around the house you will find Sonos Play 5s, a beam and a Play 1.  There is also a DIY internet radio, based on a raspberry PI zero and with built-in power supply and amp based on the ST Microelectronics TDA7384 chip in a home made wooden enclosure and 2 full range Visaton F 8 SC drivers.

When it needs to be quiet, or when I record I use my AKG K401, AKG K240 Studio or Sony MDR-7506.  That just depends whether I fancy an open, semi-closed or closed back headphone.

On the road I like to use my Fender Pro IEM in-ear headphones or even better, the Sennheiser Momentum in-ears.  The Bang & Olufsen H3s have been claimed by my daughter, who am I to contest that?

Special mention goes out to my preferred headphones when I am flying or in the office, the original Bose QuietComfort 35s...

Provided you are in range of your preferred and most amazingly sounding system, then I suggest the Colin Steele Quartet with their Jazz interpretation of the Joni Mitchell Songbook...  Today's song is not what you expect of me, but hey, they can't all be zingers. (Extra kudo's if you look up to which band I refer to here).

Music Tuesday #083: The Belgian Stooges

When everything is the same and you can't find any change in an endless monotone landscape you would be bored to death.  That is why people go to the sea or climb mountains.  When there is an end, a cravasse, a feature which is unique there you will find mankind.  We need something else to feel alive.  I will give you La Muerte this week.   Although the name sounds like they're a Latin band, they're definitely not. Do you know them?  They have been a band from Brussels since 1983.  And just like Brussels who gets its character by being squeezed between the Flemish, Walloon and European expat forces, these guys have been molded by many musical trends and influences.  As a result, think blues meets heavy-metal, with some synth thrown for good measure.  This is not for the fainthearted. But this does cleanse the soul. La Muerte - Crash Baby, Crash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR3SH6lGBZk

Music Tuesday #176: Success is a fleeting moment

This week marks the 4th year that this blog has been running.  Countless times I have almost given up, the stress of coming up with new songs and writing something about it is not a mere trifle. This week I was thinking about bands that missed their opportunity to become hugely successful, not that you must pursue this of course.  But sometimes bands disappear from the scene just before they will make it.  And that's a pity. The band I present to you split just when their breakthrough was imminent.  Maybe, in true punk style, they didn't want success?  I don't blame them.  Ultimately everyone should be allowed to make that choice.  Success is not a guarantee for happiness I guess. Music Tuesday #218: Dead Bob says punk is alive

Dead Bob is John Wright, of NomeansNo/Hanson Brothers/Mr Wright & Mr Wrong/Show Business Giants/Compressorhead/DOA/Ford Pier/Godzballs fame.  I was so looking forward to this album.  And finally here it is.  And now I have to choose a song which should trigger you to listen to the Nomeansno back catalog, of which only a tiny portion can be found on Spotify. Youtube will be your friend for this music. Expect the unexpected.  You will hear punk amongst other influences.  Because not doing what is expected is very punk.   Dead Bob - Life Like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6uN28ccvHM Dead Bob - I'm Going to Make you Cry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvQse0TUaJM
