Music Tuesday #030: It’s catching up

Sometimes you need an outlet for your anger, frustration and disappointment in humanity… for me, Nomeansno is just that.  My all time favorite band, for which I went on a pilgrimage to Victoria, Canada when they dissolved the band two years ago.
Nomeansno started at the end of the 70s at the very end of the original punk movement as the brothers Wright playing music with just drums and a bass as lead guitar (Royal Blood did not invent this).  They are considered to be “Canadian post hardcore punk”.
Many musicians today are a fan because they were known to be the tightest playing band ever playing music with crazy time shifts.  For a while they toured with two drummers, you know for the stereo effect.  I have seen them many times and got most of my hearing damage from those gigs.  They. Are. Loud.
For reference, Metallica on TW in the 90s was not as loud as Nomeansno in the old 4AD...  Finally, the band is known for, at first sight, nonsensical lyrics.  Many of their songs contain a message or something to think about.  At the same time you’re never sure if it isn’t nonsense either…  I like that attitude.

Here’s the lyrics from “Stocktaking”:

Are you getting what you want?
And are you getting what you need?
I've heard it said that love is truly sacred
But nowhere is it written that it's guaranteed

Who decides what will happen
And who decides who for?
Is this just a crazy little game
Or is this just an ugly little war?

Are you sick and tired of the same old thing
Or are you happy enough?
Tell me
When does so much become so little?
When does too little become too much?

O, and the album cover is my favorite festival shirt.  You can easily spot me :)

Music Tuesday #083: The Belgian Stooges

When everything is the same and you can't find any change in an endless monotone landscape you would be bored to death.  That is why people go to the sea or climb mountains.  When there is an end, a cravasse, a feature which is unique there you will find mankind.  We need something else to feel alive.  I will give you La Muerte this week.   Although the name sounds like they're a Latin band, they're definitely not. Do you know them?  They have been a band from Brussels since 1983.  And just like Brussels who gets its character by being squeezed between the Flemish, Walloon and European expat forces, these guys have been molded by many musical trends and influences.  As a result, think blues meets heavy-metal, with some synth thrown for good measure.  This is not for the fainthearted. But this does cleanse the soul. La Muerte - Crash Baby, Crash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR3SH6lGBZk

Music Tuesday #176: Success is a fleeting moment

This week marks the 4th year that this blog has been running.  Countless times I have almost given up, the stress of coming up with new songs and writing something about it is not a mere trifle. This week I was thinking about bands that missed their opportunity to become hugely successful, not that you must pursue this of course.  But sometimes bands disappear from the scene just before they will make it.  And that's a pity. The band I present to you split just when their breakthrough was imminent.  Maybe, in true punk style, they didn't want success?  I don't blame them.  Ultimately everyone should be allowed to make that choice.  Success is not a guarantee for happiness I guess. Music Tuesday #212: Welcome to the AA

This band is not neutral, this song certainly isn't.  I like music that has something to say.  Enjoy. Anti-Flag - American Attraction (Acoustic) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6INbXgIB6P0 Anti-Flag - American Attraction (Original version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w008c1-fHIk
